Hearing loss is gradually becoming a common problem day by day, and although it is seen mainly among old aged people, it, however, does not spare young people and even children. Studies show that about 7% of children are born with hearing loss every year. You just need to start an early intervention into the matter, so as to prevent further deterioration of your natural hearing health gifted by God.

Always remember that there are many other people out there who have a hard time listening to day to day conversation and other important sounds. They have to strain so as to listen to something properly. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, hearing loss ranks third in the list of the most common chronic health condition that the adults are facing worldwide. This problem could only be managed by going through a routine and methodical scientific hearing loss treatment procedure. This approach has proven very effective in treating a majority of the hearing loss problems. Before arriving at any conclusion, or panicing for facing difficulties in hearing, you should have a good knowledge about the various types of hearing loss treatment available at various clinics, and their advantages and disadvantages as well. Let us have a look at a brief of the same:

  • Hearing Aids - These electronic devices are very effective for hearing loss treatment. They amplify the natural sound that they receive, hence making the sound louder for the person to hear. Some hearing aids even have the capability to regain back a hearing impaired person’s normal and healthy life. There are many hearing aid users who are absolutely enjoying their life, and facing no hearing problems at all. The person just have to get a hearing check-up done from time to time, without delay. Also, hearing aids are available in a variety of types, designs and sizes based on your lifestyle choices and your hearing needs.

  • Assistive Listening Devices - Although hearing aids can solve a majority of the hearing problems, still there are a lot of people who prefer very specific and personalised hearing devices in every field of life. A single technology used in a hearing aid might not always cover each and every field. Therefore, to enhance the hearing experience of a hearing aid user, assistive listening devices are required as they are very effective for any hearing loss treatment. They include devices like, amplified telephones, assistive listening devices for televisions, compatibility of hearing aids with smartphones, FM radio, and even alerting devices - which alert you about your surroundings, thus protecting you wherever you go.

  • Cochlear Implants - These are electronic devices that are implanted in the cochlea of a hearing impaired person and thereby replacing the damaged inner ear, that is the cochlear portion. It is done by highly trained and certified Cochlear Implant team which comprises an Audiologist, Surgeon, Speech Language Pathologist, ENT Specialist, Psychologist, and others. It is implanted in the ear of the patient with the help of a surgery done by an expert Surgeon. Although Cochlear Implants are the last option for hearing loss treatment and is done when all else fails to give satisfactory results, they are very effective and efficient in treating severe to profound hearing loss.

However, it should always be kept in mind, that none of the above hearing loss treatment would restore your natural God-gifted hearing - they can only improve your hearing abilities and help you hear better, which you were, otherwise, facing difficulties in.

It can be said in conclusion, that today’s advanced hearing loss treatment methods would help you resume your happy and peaceful life that you have been missing all this while. With so many modern technologies to explore with, you will never regret in getting a good hearing loss treatment, as they will prove very effective as well as efficient. Delaying a treatment might result in irreversible effects, such as Auditory Deprivation and even Dementia. Also, if the patient is a child in his or her early ages of development, his or her speech and language skills might even get affected due to this. So a good hearing loss treatment becomes extremely essential for starting your life’s journey anew.

10 Tips for Buying Hearing Aids

Saturday, February 24, 2018 3:45:07 PM Asia/Calcutta

Hearing aids are very delicate devices that have the capability of transforming a hearing impaired person’s life completely. The right selection of hearing devices is, therefore, extremely necessary. A single decision can change your life entirely. So it is up to you which side of the coin you are really trying to achieve.

Health professionals dealing with hearing problems always suggest the patient to undergo thorough check-ups before arriving at a conclusion. However, no decision should be taken without consulting a certified and skilled Audiologist. Your Audiologist is the only person who can best understand which treatment would suit you the best. A hearing impaired person should always remember that no two person’s hearing treatments would be the same, even if they have the same hearing problems. Therefore, it is always advised to consult experts before you buy hearing aids.

You must visit a recognised clinic to get a hearing check-up, even if you do not experience any hearing problems. Following are certain secrets that you should keep in mind before you buy hearing aids for yourself or for your loved ones:

  1. Check whether you are getting good customer services - If your hearing aid store provides customer professional services, including after-sale and home services, then go for it.

  1. Never buy hearing aids that are cheap - Cheap hearing aids would not make your hearing better; it would rather do the reverse. Always consult a certified Audiologist before buying one.

  1. Always check whether the brand you are buying from is trustworthy or not - If you buy hearing aids from an unknown store, you might not get good after care services, which you are really going to need.

  1. Check whether your device is providing you with good battery back-ups - It is a very essential quality to check before you buy hearing aids, as it will promise you with a tension-free life. You would not have to worry about batteries draining out frequently.

  2. Check the warranty period of your listening device - If the brand you are buying from do not promise you to give good warranty periods, do not go for it at all.

  1. Always remember to check the performance and sound quality of your hearing device - If you buy hearing aids that compromise with the overall performance of the device, do not even give a second thought of buying it.

  1. Your listening device must be durable enough -  If you are sure that your hearing aids would last long enough, without having to worry about frequent breakdowns, then just go for it. It is the most important factor that would drive you to buy hearing aids, of course after consulting with your Audiologist.

  1. Look for technological advancements in your hearing device - With so many changes around you in the fields of technology, you must not sit back. Change is always better for a brighter future - just go for it. Check whether the device you are buying is a digital hearing aid. There is nothing that today’s advanced digital hearing aids cannot do. So just go forward and buy hearing aids that would make you forget about your hearing problems - and this is the most important feeling you would always crave for, being a hearing impaired person.

  1. Binaural hearing aids is always better - Have you ever seen a person wearing glasses just in one eye? Similar is the case of hearing aids. If you think you can wear hearing aid only in the poorer ear, and not in the better one, then you would be making a blunder. If you do not wear your devices in both the ears, then you would not have the sense of direction. For example, while you are on the roads, and suppose you are wearing hearing aid only in the left ear, and suppose if a car comes from your right side, you will be able to hear the honking in your left ear. This would give you the impression that the car is coming from your left side. This will make you move to your right side, from where the car is actually advancing. This is very dangerous, and it might even lead to dangerous accidents. Therefore, it is always advised that you should buy hearing aids for both of your ears, of course after consulting your experienced Audiologist.

  1. Last but not the least, you must also check whether the device you are going to buy would be user-friendly - Good hearing aids are built with an innate capability of adjusting itself to the environments you prefer the most. If your device is not flexible enough to use, and do not adjust to your sound surroundings automatically, then do not buy hearing aids of that manufacturer at all.

To sum up, it is not at all a good idea to buy hearing aids on your own, without consulting a professional Audiologist. Once your Audiologist chooses the best hearing treatment for you, it would be good for you to follow it without any further delay. It is the matter of your health, and without hearing life is unimaginable!

Which is the Right Hearing Loss Treatment for Me?

Wednesday, February 21, 2018 1:23:20 PM Asia/Calcutta

Hearing loss has become a common problem in our century, and about 10% of the world’s population today is suffering from hearing impairment. Just in case you are not fully aware of the problem - hearing loss or hearing impairment is the inability to hear either temporarily or permanently, in one or both the ears. You will be surprised to know that about 50% of the hearing problems are caused due to the over exposures to high decibel sounds, and the rest 50% of the causes include ageing, infections, malformations in various parts of the ear, hereditary reasons and other factors.

If you face any hearing problems, then you must not delay in getting a good hearing loss treatment from a certified Audiologist at a recognised hearing clinic. Some people still believe in the popular myth of hearing loss that it occurs only to older people with age. Unfortunately, it is not so as it does not spare the children, and even the newborn babies. So do not sit back relaxed assuming that you won’t be affected by hearing problems until you reach a later age. Consult a trained Audiologist today, as delaying a hearing loss treatment may have make it grow more severe.

It is, however, a good news that a majority of the hearing problems can be treated, if not fully cured. So there is no reason for you to believe that hearing impairment is a life changing catastrophic event. After opting for a proper and correct hearing loss treatment in time, you can get back your hearing ability as closer to its natural effect as possible. Although the modern hearing aids amplify the sounds as naturally as possible, no such treatment exists in which you can get back your natural and God-gifted hearing abilities.

You should never decide anything by yourself regarding matters of hearing loss treatment, as it will only be decided by an experienced Audiologist after he/she has done a detailed analysis of your hearing health. Depending on the severity and type of your hearing loss, your Audiologist will prescribe the appropriate hearing loss treatment for you from which you will be benefitted. You must also be aware of the various diagnostics and treatments available, and they include -

  • Diagnostic tests to diagnose the type and degree of hearing loss, and they include Pure Tone Audiometry, Tympanometry, Eustachian Tube Function Test, Speech Audiometry, BERA, ASSR, OAE and other specialised tests.

  • Rehabilitative treatments include hearing aid trial and fitting, hearing aid reprogramming, auditory training, Tinnitus matching and Tinnitus Retraining Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Auditory Verbal Therapy.

  • Surgeries of damaged parts of the ear, and special surgeries like Cochlear Implant that bypass the damaged regions of the Cochlear area in the inner ear.

A hearing loss treatment vary depending on the severity of the hearing problems. Hearing loss is either temporary or permanent. The causes of temporary hearing loss might be some internal ear injury or an infection. It can be treated with cleaning the ear canal, certain medications or injections. Permanent hearing problems are irreversible, and if not given timely attention, may lead to serious consequences. These are caused from various reasons, and can be best treated with hearing aids or cochlear implants, if hearing devices did not provide much benefits.

Regaining hearing back depends upon the choice of the hearing loss treatment. If the right and appropriate treatment procedures are followed, then you can get back most of your normal hearing. If you delay in the hearing loss treatment, then a time may come when your brain will stop receiving the important sound signals, known as Auditory Deprivation. So you need to keep the auditory centre of your brain stimulated. Auditory Deprivation may also lead to Dementia, which includes the symptoms like depression, anxiety, loneliness, confusion, and forgetfulness.

Therefore, it is not at all a good idea to delay getting a good hearing loss treatment even if it is mild and in its initial stage. Also, if your child is suffering from hearing loss, then you must immediately take his or her to a trained Audiologist, as it is the appropriate age to learn communication skills. If a child is deprived of hearing abilities, then he or she might face problems in learning speech and language skills, and as a result of which, other developmental skills might get affected as well. Therefore, get a proper hearing loss treatment without delay, as it is foolish to sit back and endure your problems in silence.

Hearing Aid History: From Animal Horns to Digital Technology

Saturday, February 17, 2018 12:59:52 PM Asia/Calcutta

Hearing aids have long been in use for the last few decades. But what is the difference between the earlier devices and the future ones? The answer is quite obvious, yet fascinating. Listening devices have undergone a sea change in this modern generation of technological advancements. It is getting tougher day by day to choose between hearing aids, as each one has the potential to outshine the other. Therefore, it requires extreme patience and mindfulness on your part to choose the best hearing aid device.

With that said, it should also be kept in mind that you should always consult a trained Audiologist before taking any decision. You cannot decide for yourself which hearing aid would suit you the best - it is the job of the specialised professionals in the profession of Audiology. You should always keep one thing in mind that all devices would not benefit you. It depends on your hearing type and severity that which particular device would be the perfect one for you, and it is determined only by an expert Audiologist with many years of experience.

Digital hearing aids, the modern advanced version of listening devices, have seen such a wide variety of innovations since the past few years, and is still evolving every moment with new features. Since times immemorial, man has pursued ways to eradicate problems and obstacles as far as possible so as to lead a better quality of life. Digital hearing aids is the outcome of this long process of continuous pursuit. Previously when people suffered from hearing problems, they used to curl their hands around their ears to try to listen to the other person better. As this problem became popular among the population worldwide, the need for listening aids or devices expanded and people began to explore the new possibilities of emerging in the field of listening devices.

The 13th century saw primitive listening devices which were hollow shells or horns of sheep or other animals such as cows and rams, after which in 18th century came the ear trumpets. Although, these devices did not have the capability to amplify sounds, they could collect all sounds and delivered them via a narrow passage or tube. This method was quite popular until in the 19th to 20th century, when the first electronic hearing aids came into existence, after the telephone was invented. People with hearing loss soon realised that they could hear better via the telephone than in person. Therefore, a need for such a listening device became extremely essential which would have a carbon transmitter (used in telephones) that could amplify the electrical sounds and increase the decibel levels.

The years 1921-1952 saw the development of vacuum tubes, which are much better substitutes of carbon transmitters. With the introduction of the vacuum tube technology, hearing aids not only began showing much more effective results, but also began to reduce in size, and could be fit into small boxes. However, these devices were still much heavy and bulky, amplifying all the sounds, even the unimportant ones. Various researchers probe deep into the possibilities of improving these devices, and finding out effective solutions for these problems, until the invention of transistor technology in the mid-20th century. This advanced technology made listening devices more flexible and efficient, reducing their sizes even more. A major innovation in listening devices is that, these were the first devices that could be easily worn inside the ear canal, thus making them completely invisible. These devices paved the way for more advanced listening devices that was yet to evolve in the next few years - the digital hearing aids.

The major turnover in the history of the development of hearing aids is the transformation of analog technology into digital technology. The previous analog devices used to amplify all sounds without distinguishing between them. However, with the introduction of digital hearing aids, the digital technology could amplify only the speech by reducing background noise, thus increasing the flexibility of these devices.

Today, digital technology has reached much wider horizons, and this 21st century is the witness of the ever growing innovations in listening devices, such as connectivity technologies like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, FM and many more. Today the digital hearing aids could be easily connected to and controlled by smartphone apps. Also, these modern devices come with good battery backups and could be easily recharged from time to time, without having to worry about running out of batteries.

To sum up, we can say that analysts of digital hearing aids are continuously trying to open up new windows to new innovations so as to make more and more efficient and at the same time, aesthetic devices. That day is not far when modern digital hearing aids may wipe out hearing problems altogether.
